In 1965
the art further transformed as Da sifu Vuittonet was introduced to aikido
and shotokan karate via mail order instruction books. Later on, as a teenager,
Da sifu would commute to Brownsville two(2) times a week to study with "Tony"
a black belt in Shotokan; and did so until the early 70's.
"There wasn't to many people interested in the martial arts back then...and
finding formal instruction was difficult to say the least...I always thought
I was pretty smart (and that got me in trouble at times) so I bought every
book that I could find and did it the super hard way.....but it paid off...latter
on -in California, I mingled with the best of them", says Da sifu.
Since an early age, Da sifu began researching other styles of Karate and Kung Fu and purchased numerous books and other text on the subject. Da sifu Vuittonet ultimately combined, what he perceived to be the best techniques from all the styles and incorporated them into one - Tao Muryo Waza (the way of unlimited techniques). In 1971 Da sifu Vuittonet opened his first school "Vuittonet School of Self Defense" in Raymondville, Texas.
The "Kung
Fu Business" began to "get good" when Bruce Lee hit the big screen. This was
a movie Bruce had filmed in '71...it was called "The Big Boss"....(Fists
of Fury in America) released in 1973..
Sensi Eddie Vuittonet, as he was known by back then, moved his school downtown
near the old Texas Theater. He had over seventy(70) students. He told me that
he was charging $15.00 a month for classes and did not have any room nor time
for anymore.
"We use to get $1.00 to $1.50 an hour for working a steady job back then...so
I was doing real good...real good", states Dr. Vuittonet.
Da sifu
opened up a second school in Harlingen, Texas in early 1973.
"I had nothing but trouble in Harlingen...I was teaching something different,
and "new instructors" were popping up everywhere. They were literally
crawling out of the wood work"...this was due to all the Bruce Lee hype
of the day. A new local school owner didn't' like me getting into his territory...not
to mention the fact that I was running as a black belt back then...self-taught...without
no cracker jack certificates on the wall. Back in the day...that was unheard
of..you were immediately labeled a fake or hustler...especially if you were
proud of it, and not willing to fake credentials like they probably were."
"I was fast... faster than normal. I guess it was them (the instructors)
from the rival school that called the local light company, pretending to be
me and had the electricity from my building turned off...that did not help
business", Da sifu says.
" One day, they made the mistake of paying me a visit. There were three(3)
of them...two(2) sporting black belts and one wearing a green belt. One of
the black belts told me "to get out of town". They surrounded me ...instead
of fighting them I decided to give them a quick lesson in Vui-Waza. I ignored
them and begin to warm up for class...I snapped five(5) to ten(10) quick,
blinding kicks in the air...and threw twenty(20) to thirty(30) super fast
punches in a matter of seconds...(near them); I then went for a pair of nunchukas
which I had on my person....and whirled them around in various directions
well over 120mph. I use to practice eight(8) to ten(10) hours a day back then...that
was my job...I took it serious. I looked at them and asked them who wanted
to be first...or if they wanted, they could all jump in at any time! I guess
I scared the hell out of them...No - I know I did!! They were plastic, not
conditioned...not true martial artists...they didn't want to test their skills...and
- they definitely didn't want to have any thing to do with me, especially
after my private little demonstration. The black belts made some comments
and warned me again. For the first time I was glad that I had rented a real
dump...as they were walking out the door, the door hit one of the black belts
on his flabby back side, I laughed...I could not help myself. None-the-less,
business was bad, I closed that school down, within a month...it never took
off...not to mention I was near a bar - bad location - very bad", states
Da sifu
Da sifu
states that the industry changed after Bruce Lee died. He states that something
in him died that day...the day he learned of Bruce Lee's death. Soon after,
he left for California to teach for the Department of Community Affairs Department
- City of Fresno in late 1973.
"I visited my brother, Louis, that summer and was told that the City of Fresno
was looking for a Karate instructor...many instructors in town wanted it...I
met with Mr. Thomas Vargas a Community Department Supervisor. I did a couple
of moves and kicks...he hired me on the spot. My wife and I packed up or bags
and moved to California. Soon after, I had so many students, that later on,
at Mosqueda Center, I had to teach with a microphone... Dr. Robert Quesada,
my boss, suggested that. I got paid by the hour...the classes were
free for the public...I had hundreds of students...there is where Muryo Waza
was officially named. Vui-Waza was gone and in its place was Muryo Waza...The
way of Unlimited Techniques. One of my students, Roland Takayoka, had it translated
for me", states Da sifu
"I
went to Hollywood to audition at Burbank Studios for the movie " The Bruce
Lee Story" in 1975...later Robert Clause,
the man that directed Enter the Dragon, invited me to Santa Barbara, California
- I guess to discuss a project.... the studio backing or money must not have
been there, at that time..that particular project did not manifest until 20
years later...as we know a movie was later filmed and released in the early
90's and called Dragon. The original guy that got the role back then,
was pictured in Black Belt Magazine.....I was not able to make the appointment
in Santa Barbara (no reason of my own) and soon got a blank letter with all
my pictures sent back to me. It seems that I was handed the invitation letter
to late and was unable to respond, because the return address had been torn
by someone in the home I was staying with. Needless to say, my wife and I
moved out"...and my movie career (if that what the meeting was about)
took a nose dive", states Da sifu.
Dr. Vuittonet states that Linda Lee and Robert Lee were there (Bruce Lee's
widow and brother) at the auditions. Chuck Norris was there also..."At
that time, it was like a dream come true..", says Da sifu.
"Then, Hollywood came to me the next time around...the original version
of Blues Brothers 2 supposedly called for a kung fu scene...and my name was
brought up as a possibility for the scene - by some one who knew of me. I
was told that a studio rep of some kind had come looking for me at the Mosqueda
Community Center in Fresno. I was in West Texas and in Mexico (Eagle Pass
and Piedras Negras) at the time opening up two new schools. Again, fate had
something different planned for me...I heard that the martial art fight scene
was cut out of the movie at the last minute ", states Da sifu.
"I finally did do a fight scene...in a public service film called "Community
Development In Action" produced by the City of Fresno in 1976. In the film
I fight off a gang of thugs and beat the ###@@** out of all 7 of them...proving
to the viewers that the cities social /recreational programs were viable....as
I grew older and somewhat jaded...I no longer desired to be in films - and
that elusive dream, as with all things, faded away".
.
Dr. Vuittonet briefly left Fresno, California in 1976
to assist one of his black sash priests, Ruben Supulveda open up the Muryo
Waza Academy of Self Defense in Eagle Pass, Texas and in Mexico. On one occasion
Dr. Vuittonet gave an evening demonstration after every movie in the Azteca
Theater in Eagle Pass in order to recruit disciples. The next day the local
newspapers in Eagle Pass and across the border had rave reviews making the
school an instant success. In his spare time, Dr. V. worked as a Deputy Constable.
The first
Muryo Waza International school was opened in Piedras Negras, Mexico in 1977.
(He now has thousands of Mexican students from across the border and in other
parts of Mexico studying a splinter style of Muryo Waza)
By June of 1978 Dr. Vuittonet had returned
and was teaching, part-time once more at Mosqueda Center - Fresno, California.
"I was getting burned out...coordinating the schools, working full-time "at
my other job" and all...I had been kicking and punching everyday for so many
years...I sacrificed allot for the art...the life style....I was slowly losing
the discipline... I wanted to eat burgers, pizza... drink lots and lots of
beer - do what other people around me were doing", states Dr. Vuittonet.
Da sifu
continued to teach police and security personnel, and other persons which
he does not care to elaborate on, as well as, worked in the security industry
- up and until 1985.
In April of 1985 Da sifu moved back to Texas and used his experience in security,
law enforcement and other related "activities" to garnish a State license
to operate an Investigative and Security Guard business - later on that year, he expanded the business by diversifying into repairing and restoring bicycles and lawn mowers....a far stretch from his stent with the 190th. In 1998 he incorporated, 1016West.com, E & A Productions, Dr. PedalDynamo, Vuittonet Farm & Ranch, E. Vuittonet Private Security & Investigations into one unit called ISOG, INC., Investigations Security Observations Group, Inc.
"I
like to believe that I created an amazing and unique modern day, martial arts
style, back in a time when it was viewed as an art...a way of life, not just
some alternate form of exercise. An art form with aggressive, deadly, applications
designed for modern day urban combat survival. This is a style devoid of style...one
with no limits or restraints - a way of unlimited techniques."
In line with the true concept of Muryo Waza and its pure essence, when it
was done...when it was time.. Da sifu simply walked away.
" I walked away", exclaims Da sifu.
He was twice elected as a judge ......"Judge Vuittonet",
and spends his days, "tinkering" with small out door power
equipment engines, bicycles, pneumatic equipment and creating graphics and web sites at
1016westAmerica - far removed from it all... ISOG, Inc. now represents over 20 major manufactures as an authorized service center doing warranty work and parts sales., and includes a full blown bicycle shop.
Eddie creates character animations and still continues to draw and paint, as he has done since art school(s) back in the 1960's.
"Dr V" continues, at his discretion, to perform small contract work - when
asked....and time permits at the Service Center. He can no longer performs those amazing kicks , or execute the blinding
hand techniques that he was known for because of a mild stroke in 2003, which left him with crippling rheumatoid arthritis
and right side paralysis...none the less, he remains in good spirits. He is the chief
executive officer of several corporations, including the Muryo Waza International
Corporation. At times, he teaches Muryo Waza privately, from his
cane....you can still see the gleam in his eye when he talks about the "good
old days", and how he was able to do it his way, despite the
critics, nay sayers, and want-to-be warriors.
Muryo Waza is now officially recognized, world wide,
as a genuine, non-traditional system of martial arts developed in the Western
Hemisphere, in the 20th century by an individual of non-asian decent. Grandmaster Eddie Vuittonet is now also included and listed, along side many of the great martial artists of all times.
